Proteoglycans

What are they?

Proteoglycans are natural macromolecules present in the extracellular matrix of the different tissues in our body such as the skin. They are formed by a core protein to which different carbohydrate or glycosaminoglycan (GAG) chains attach, in addition to other extracellular space molecules like hyaluronic acid and collagen fibres, creating a support structure and attracting water molecules. This enables them to moisturise and firm the skin.

What do they do for your skin?

Help maintain skin functions, mechanical properties and a healthy complexion.

Their main functions are:

- Hydration: maintain the hydration of the extracellular space.
- Structural: sustain. Involved in synthesising the molecules that make up the extracellular matrix.
- Firmness: associated with other molecules such as collagen or hyaluronic acid, making the skin firm.
